In recent weeks, both Russia and Ukraine have intensified their missile and drone attacks. Russia is using its numerical superiority and the restrictions imposed on Western weapons systems to its advantage. Two weeks after the start of the Ukrainian ground offensive in Russia's Kursk Oblast, Russia carried out the most extensive missile and drone attack on Ukraine to date, hitting primarily civilian facilities, residential buildings and critical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is working hard to build resilience and counter the potential decline in Western support. The Kremlin is simultaneously seeking diplomatic and military support, as illustrated by Vladimir Putin's visit to Ulan Bator and the impending deliveries of ballistic missiles from Iran.
The Ukrainian offensive may be reaching its climax in Kursk Oblast. Ukrainian forces lack heavy engineering equipment to build effective defensive lines, while Russian troops are carrying out massive air strikes on Ukrainian units. In Donetsk Oblast, the Russian advance continues to be concentrated in the Pokrovsk area, where significant gains in territory have been made. The inadequate defenses behind Pokrovsk could force Ukrainian forces to engage in further delaying battles deep in the hinterland.
